Does fabric softener actually do anything?

When I was single I used to launder my clothes just fine without fabric softener. My wife insists on buying and using it, but I notice no difference in the softness of the clothes. I call it the "waste of money sauce". Does anyone one know if this blue goop actually does anything productive or are we just hoping it will actually make our clothes softer?
