Response to Literature On This Poem?

When yzing a poem it is always best to break it into steps and reread. First try and get the surface meaning, in this case about the two trees. When applicable figure out the rhyme scheme, the rhyme scheme here changes throughout the poem. Then examine how the author uses different literary devices in order to get the deeper meaning. In this poem you could talk about the use of similes and metaphors. After that you should consider the denotation and connotation of the words or what the words technically mean and the feeling behind them. Once you have dedicated the energy to the mechanics of the poem you can delve into the deeper meaning. This poem seems to be about how the narrator appreciates the beautiful but truly loves those who have had struggles.
